Zandra Rhodes’s Autumn/Winter 1984 womenswear show 'The Magic Carpet Collection' was presented during London Fashion Week. This collection embraced the opulence and maximalism of the 1980s. The collection was inspired by 1920s flapper girls, as seen in Rhodes's use of drop waists and midi frayed hemlines. Each gown was heavily beaded and encrusted with jewels and draped cowl necklines. Layers of tulle and sheer silk cascaded on to the runway while dramatically voluminous hair added extra glamour, while the short segments where models dramatically danced and engaged with the audience added to the spectacle. Rich colors and high-wattage shine made for a perfect eveningwear collection. Further daytime wear came in the form of structured woolen separates in black and white check. The final part of the show featured tiered white gowns that were heavily beaded and covered in layers of sheer silk.
